Is Taking is Easy During the Winter Stupid?

exercise.gifBy Tony Zamora (usatriathlon.org)

Over all the years I’ve been training and coaching, I hear the same question year after year. “Should I be training in the winter?” I recently came across a post in a popular training forum with the same question as well, and the overwhelming response was that you should take it easy between December and March, allowing your body to recover and then slowly build back up for the next year’s racing season.

I am completely against this thought process! Not only will you lose most of what you’ve...

Life is Too Short...

chocolate.gifChocolate is Not Just for Lovers

By Susan Kitchen (usatriathlon.org)

Life is too short not to indulge once in a while — especially in chocolate. But don’t grab a 3 Musketeers candy bar thinking you are doing your body a favor. Not all chocolate is created equal. Dark chocolate packs the biggest health punch compared to milk and white chocolate.

The secret behind dark chocolate’s powerful punch is the cacao bean, rich in a plant-based organic compound called flavonoids. Flavanols, the primary type of...

Screaming Like a Little Girl...

jenn-run.gifED. Minnesota duathletes totally rocked the national racing scene in 2013.(See yesterday's post.) In the end, three--Dan Hedgecock, Ruth Brennan Morrey and Jenn Scudiero--of our state's best run-bike-runners were named US Duathlete of the Year, two taking the pro titles, the other winning the women's amateur award. The amateur champ was Jenn Scudiero, who sent on these words:

By Jenn Scudiero

I started 2013 with one goal: compete in the ITU Duathlon World Championships.  I had never been to the world championships before and I thought it would be a great experience.   I also wanted to see what I could accomplish with more consistent training. I really had no idea how to put together a good training plan, especially for an athlete with  a full-time job and 2 year old.  So, I found someone who did.  After a lot of research, I was super excited to start working with coach Jason Digman from Dig It Tri. ...

Kona- Time flies! Here it is the end of Feb and I'm in my build for my next Ironman but haven't yet written a word about Kona. I have never felt worse during a race in my entire life but my rule for Kona was that if I was still breathing I was going to finish! And I was still breathing, BARELY, so I finished :-) It was a long brutal day filled with blood, sweat, tears, cramps galore and insane sunburn but I have chosen to only remember, write about and take away the positive...
