Do Your Legs Hurt?

It started as a mild ache along the inside of your shin after a long run. Now you can barely limp along the pool deck without pain. Or maybe your leg tightens up after 2 miles into your runs. At first the feeling was an annoyance, but now things have progressed to the point that you can barely lift your foot up after 5K.  The pain is so intense you are forced to stop. Your symptoms quickly improve, but on your next run it’s the same thing. You change your shoes, try a yoga class, adjust your bike, but nothing is helping! What should you do next? 

If exercise-related leg pain is interfering with your ability to train and compete, seeking advice from a sports medicine expert is essential. There are multiple causes of leg pain in the athlete including (but not limited to): 

  1. bone stress injury
  2. muscle/tendon strain
  3. chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS)
  4. vascular issues such as popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and external iliac artery endofibrosis (EIAE)
  5. nerve entrapment syndromes. A careful evaluation is required to ensure a quick diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. ...

Page Turning: Going Pro....

It’s crazy to type this out and has been a long time coming, but in 2019, I will be a professional triathlete. This post will give you a little backstory and why I’m turning the page to the next chapter of racing pro.  To fill those in on how I received my pro qualification, I won an Ironman 70.3 event. Two actually, but the criteria states that one must finish in the top three at one major race. We did that twice, booya! A few things will change when I go pro and they are outlined below. Most things, though, will remain the same. I’ll still contest my 5am alarm, go to work from 9-5, and even get judged for round 2 at the Trader Joe’s sample station.
 
The backstory on me…. I started out this journey in 2012. During my first race after being inspired by my mom to sign up for a triathlon, I made it about 30 yards into the swim before having something just shy of a panic attack causing me to stop. Then I realized that not only would I get swam over by the men’s field, but the women’s field was about to do the same if I did not restart (they still did successfully). From this race, the sport grabbed me and I have loved every second of it. The training, the dorky equipment, the competitive nature of lining up for each race ready to give everything you have once the horn sounds– I love it all. Going pro seemed like a way to explore triathlon more and I made it my goal around 2015 to reach the top level. At the time, I didn’t have a clue what that meant to win at a high level. ...

Looking Back. Looking Ahead....

What an incredible year. Started with finding the woman of my dreams in Tucson. Alexa has changed my life in ways i never thought possible. Found something that makes me so happy and feel so loved.


Followed that with a great... adventurous road trip to Tennessee where I ended up qualifying for my Pro License in triathlon with a great performance at Chattanooga coming 2nd overall.


Climbed the grand canyon in under 7 hours with Alexa, followed by 2 more beautiful hikes the following day :D


Set a few course records this summer around the area.


Went on a few day mountain biking trip....

Choosing What You Eat After a Workout...

So you have done a great job to fuel and stay hydrated prior to your long workout or your race but afterwards you don’t eat for three hours, or you take in a big cheesy burger and fries and you only have a couple glasses of water. You go for an easy spin the next day and wonder why your energy is low and you don’t feel recovered.   


Executing a successful nutrition and hydration plan after your workouts is one key element to successful training and racing. When considering nutrition and hydration after a workout and race, it is important not only to choose the right type of foods and fluid but also the amount of food and hydration to optimize your recovery.
