A Love Letter to My Dumb Bike Trainer...

We’re snow deep in winter right now, which means one thing: lots of time on the bike trainer. Teammates and friends are posting Zwift workouts, and I recently finished a 28-day bike block (my third go-round of it), which got me thinking: what is it about the trainer – specifically my “dumb” lime green Kurt Kinetic road machine trainer – that I love so much? Let’s have a look…

We’ve been together since 2013 and have seen a lot of miles – from easy 80w recovery rides to hard 5-hour interval rides. Most of those have been happy miles, but others have been tear-filled and soul-crushing (I’m looking at you, 2017 IM Canada training). But you know what? Even the crappy ones made me appreciate what my body, legs, and mind are capable of.

I love that you’ve taught me the power of focus. There’s nothing like staring at 3sec and lap power fields on my Garmin – Girl Talk blaring in my headphones – trying to maintain and hit target watts during a mind-numbing 45-minute interval x3. Or...

"Izzy's First Tri is in the Books"....

YWCA Indoor Triathlon #2 - Every Sunday, my 16-year old daughter and I have a standing swim date. Rain, sunshine, blizzard, or ice storm, we rarely miss our Sunday time at the Y (my office is just 2 blocks from YMCA Gaviidae, so this is our pool of choice, and the poolside hot tub and sauna make it more enticing in the winter months).  We are recreational freestyle swimmers...no flip turns, very “marginal” form, and plenty of back stroke, pull buoys/kickboards, and we’re basically there to get in an easy no-impact workout on a running day off. It’s great bonding time for us, and an opportunity to let the hot tub jets offer us a free massage.

A few weeks ago, after one of these swims, my daughter said to me “Mom, can you sign us up for an Indoor Tri?” Music to this mom triathlete’s ears. Izzy is a high school cross country runner and has recently found biking on our kinetic trainer in the basement to work well as a cross train day. As a dabbler in all 3 disciplines, she felt ready to take the Indoor Tri...

YWCA INDOOR TRIATHLON #2 - Like the first race in this four-event series, last weekend's YWCA Indoor Tri was well attended (91 finishers), though the female/male ratio is still in a bit out-of-whack. In January, women outnumbered men 70 - 23. Last Sunday, that ratio was basically identical (70 - 21).

We'd love to see more guys at these cool events.

Let's talk about the "Long" event first. A pair of transplanted New York staters took the Top 2 spots, with a local woman returing to the podium....
