More Love For King B....

Web_banner__Winter.png

Our fingers are crossed. According to Weather.com, St. Paul could get 3-5 inches of snow today. And maybe some more tomorrow. That would be awesome for the 100-or- so (currently more than 82 athletes have signed up for the race) people who will be taking part in Sunday's King Boreas Winter Triathlon at Lake Phalen. This event, as in 2015, is the USAT Winter Tri National Championship....

"...the words I needed to hear."

HITS-Naples Race Report - On Monday, January 2nd, 10 of my teammates from Iowa State and I packed a 15 passenger van to the brim, loaded our bikes in a trailer, and drove 23.5 hours down to Naples, Florida. This trip has become an annual event, and it's meant to be a week of laying on the beach, training, and fun. At the end of the week, on Sunday, everybody competes in the HITS Triathlon on Vanderbilt Beach. This is a pretty small local race. We are definitely among the youngest competitors, but it's fun to get a little warm weather training in and get excited for Collegiate Nationals which occurs in April every year.

The race began something like this... 38 degrees. 30 degree windchill. 8-10 foot swells on the beach. A rip tide and small craft warning. You'd think being from Minnesota that I'd be prepared for every race condition under the sun. Let me tell you, this wasn't one of them. I've been racing competitively for 7 years, and never have I been so unmotivated to start a race as much as this one....

Gwen's Preggers!

Gwen_preggers.pngBy Liz Hitchens (triathlete.com)

Rio Olympic champion Gwen Jorgensen announced on her social media channels yesterday that she’s expecting her first child with husband Patrick Lemieux this August. Both Jorgensen and Lemieux make no secret of their love for great food and chose to follow that theme in their announcement.

The news comes as no surprise as Jorgensen was clear that her post-Olympic plans included starting a family. In an interview following the NYC Marathon (where she ran a 2:41:01 in her debut at the distance) with Triathlete.com back on Nov. 8, Jorgensen laid out what the perfect year from that point would look like: “I get pregnant right now, ...

Orthorexia Isn't Good...

There’s a secret among nutritionists. We have clients who eat “better” than we do. It’s true. Depending on how you define better, there are many triathletes and others out there who strive to eat the perfect amounts of vegetables and fruits (and only organic and local), who eat no sugar or refined grains (and are gluten-free), and who carefully choose (or exclude) their protein and fat sources based on what they believe to be the most credible sources available (usually a well-known coach, author or academic expert).

In fact, attempting to eat too perfectly has a name. It’s called orthorexia nervosa, and it’s defined as being overly fixated on healthy eating....

Debunking Swimming Myths...

Front-of-the-pack swimmer Sara McLarty debunks some common beliefs about swimming as a triathlete.

By Sara McLarty (triathlete.com)

1. Freestyle is the only stroke triathletes need to know.
Freestyle is the fastest and most efficient stroke, so it will be used most of the time when completing a long-distance swim. However, every triathlete should have a “safety” stroke to use when they are tired, need to find the buoys or clear their goggles in a race. Plus, learning other strokes works different muscles and keeps things interesting....
