Zero Regrets....

sean-and-fam.gifED. We found the following words on Facebook yesterday and immediately sought permission to repost. This is from Sean Kaneski, who is a Minnesota multisport pioneer.

A quick note of thanks to all of the LAMS members who energetically signed up for IMOO last fall. It was very cool to see everyone pushing themselves to do one of these challenging and rewarding events. It was so inspiring that it enticed me to jump back in after over a decade break from racing IM's.
After signing up for IMOO last fall, I embarked on probably the most intensive off-season training regimen that I have ever done and it went very well. My body held up through it all with no injuries. Right now, training is going as well as it ever has - I have reached and surpassed every benchmark that I had set for swimming, biking and running.... I am confident that at 43 I am well on track to meet or surpass what I accomplished when did my last IM at 31. Further, I am loving every minute of training and remember why I love this sport....

Dialing in That Hydration Thing...

triathlete-drinking.gifBy Brooke Schohl (usatriathlon.org)

You’ve seen it before — the overzealous athlete chugging a gallon of water race morning. Is this necessary? Safe? Recommended? In the midst of summer and scorching temperatures, it’s tempting to overdo it with fluids. But be careful! Overhydrating can lead to hyponatremia, when blood sodium levels become diluted. As a result, your body’s water levels rise, and cells begin to swell. As you can guess, this isn’t a good situation.

On the flipside — dehydration is incredibly dangerous as well. Dehydration occurs when you lose more fluids than you take in. Vigorous exercise, especially in hot or humid weather, expedites fluid loss through sweat. This condition can be mild to moderate, or severe. Mild/moderate symptoms include a dry mouth, tiredness, thirst, decreased urine output, dry skin, headache, constipation and dizziness. Severe dehydration takes a more drastic turn with warning signs like little to no urination, extreme...

June 2015 Performance Report Card...

sheri--lc-nats.gifIf the MMAs were presented every month during the season, who would win the awards for June 2015? Here are our choices:

JUNIOR OF THE MONTH - Nick Klonne, 18, Rockford - In three starts, Nick was top junior and set AG records each time. At Manitou, he placed 2nd overall and also cracked the Top 10 (9th) at Liberty Half. At Buffalo Olympic, he placed 11th.

Also considered: Eliot Slade, Mitchell Clayton and Alyson Welch.

MASTER OF MONTH: Kevin O'Connor, 44, Medina - KO raced often and awesomely. In five starts he had one outright win (Liberty Olympic), two amateur wins (Pigman Sprint and RochesterFest Olympic - Masters CR), a 2nd (Lake Waconia) and a 4th (Capitol City).

Also considered: Tony Schiller, Sarah Mercer, Cheryl Zitur.

GRAND MASTER OF THE MONTH - Sheri Schrock, 61, Cohasset (photo L) - Sheri WON her AG by a huge margin at the ITU Long Distance World Championships in Motala, Sweden last weekend. For us, this effort gave her an edge over fellow considerees Jan Guenther, Greg Taylor and Deb Roberts....

IronCowboy Riding Into Minnesota...

ironCowboy.gifBy Christina Meier

James Lawrence, the current Guinness World Record Holder for Most Ironmans Completed in a Year, is taking on a 50-state Challenge this summer that he aptly calls the 50-50-50 Challenge.

His purpose is to bring a national awareness to the ever-growing epidemic of childhood obesity, “We’re the first generation where the parents are slated to outlive their children,” The Iron Cowboy said, “The epidemic is so crazy that I had to do something that equaled its craziness in order for people to pay attention.” He’ll race 50 Ironman-distance triathlons in 50 consecutive days in 50 states to bring awareness and raise funds to fight this epidemic....

Mikey Beat Goldie. Matt Beat Everyone Else...

mikey-and-goldie.gifBy Matthew Payne (matthew-payne.blogspot.com)

Mikey ran his first race a couple weeks ago. It was a totally non-competitive kids fun run across a parking lot, but hey, we all started somewhere.

Check out his sweet starting line game face (he's the one in the yellow pants)...

I lined up for a few races myself and did pretty well:  Gear West Duathlon (2nd), Apple Duathlon (1st) and Duathlon Nationals (1st).

The Pre-Race Jams

You've gotta love a band like Madball. These guys have been putting out the exact same album since the 90's. If you could reach back into 1994 and magically put modern production on their old shit it would sound exactly like the new shit. It's kind of like my tri training... I've been doing basically the same routine for a decade and I somehow keep getting faster. If it ain't broke don't fix it. ...
