Nothing Scares Her Anymore...

About a week before an Ironman I start to get a little anxiety about the mass swim start, it is very violent and crowded to say the least. However after Kona and IM Cabo I am not nervous about the Wisconsin start this year. My heart rate will still be higher in the first 5 to 10 mins of the swim then it will be the entire day and I will still have to be attentive and swim defensively with my arms protecting my head. Two years ago before IM WI I was absolutely terrified of the swim start but after 3 IMs in the bank and the chaos of my last two starts I feel like Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone running out his front door shouting, "Hey! I'm not afraid anymore!"

I was trying to find footage of the mass swim start at the 2014 IM Los Cabo and I ended up finding coverage of the entire event and it makes me want to go back and race there so bad! Anyway the mass beach swim start is at 7:15 and it still gives me chills. It is beautiful and horrifying at the same time and was 5 times more frightening than a waist deep mass IM start....

Minnesota's Teen Talent...Updated...

nick-klonne.gifThe 2014 Minnesota Multisport Awards are tentatively scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 25 at Gear West Bike and Triathlon in Long Lake. Triathletes Choice Race of the Year voting will begin on September 15, as will the announcing of award nominees. Between now and then MTN will reveal the names of those whom the MMA Selectors are considering as possible nominees in the various categories.

Today we will introduce those who are being considered for 2014 Junior of the Year. These athletes need to have turned in at least three outstanding performances this year. There efforts are measured against the divisional course records of the races they’ve competed in, and against the performances of those who have won the JOY, or been nominated, in the past.

After all the resumes are reviewed, each of the Selectors will recommend four candidates. The four athletes who receive the most support will be announced as the official nominees.

As is always the case with the JOY category, a number of talented teens raced only once or twice during the season and therefore were ineligible for consideration. This year, Racquel Wohlk, Parker Roehl, Nathan Bich and Alyson Welch are in this group....

toilet-bike.gifBy Devon Palmer (palmertri.wordpress.com)

Ironman Wisconsin 2014 is just days away. That means The Gold Guys are having me put out my annual #prosknowbest advice. You can get this advice by following me on twitter @dpalmertri. #prosknowbest is a series of crucial tips to help you do your absolute best on race day. It is VERY important to interpret these tips literally.

To get us started, I have made an important discovery that will change the world of triathlon training forever. This discovery is based on a methodical analysis and synthesis of two common triathlon sayings.

There are lots of popular sayings in our fine sport of triathlon. Some people say “more is better”. Some people say “less is more”. I’m inclined to put those two...

Combining 3 Professions: Athlete, Psychologist, Parent...

kids-playing.gifBy Ruth Brennan Morrey (ruthbrennanmorrey.com)

Mental health has received significant national attention in the past two weeks with the passing of Robin Williams and his longstanding battle with depression. A PhD in psychology has certainly prepared me well to work with patients who are living with a large spectrum of psychological disorders while providing adequate education and utilizing empirically validated treatments for improved outcome. Ironically, however, I always feel somewhat ill equipped to discuss the difficult topic of suicide and...

PVC & Therapy Balls...

alltools.gifFormer Recovery Secrets....

By Heather Lendway (heatherlendway.com)

As triathletes our bodies take a beating day after day. The thought of using recovery to get faster is probably at the back of our minds. I personally have never been fond of days off, “recovery” days, “tapering” or resting. Unfortunately if you don’t take care of your body eventually it will break down and which may lead to injury.

Even with rest and recovery we’re still pretty hard on our bodies. Here are some ‘tools’ I use (or have tried) to help promote recovery and healing to be as fresh as possible for my next training session.

1. PVC pipe – This has been my best friend since recovering from stress fractures in 2007. I roll out on a 3 inch PVC pipe following every run and ride.   Rolling on a PVC pipe is pretty intense if you’re not used to it, a four inch PVC pipe is a little...
