40th Timberman Sprint Preview...

The 40th TIMBERMAN, Minnesota's premier "Destination Triathlon," is happening next Saturday and you can still get in. Registration doesn't close until 11:59 PM on Thursday (7/10), so we encourage those who are currently on the fence about enrolling to join the 300-or-so athletes who have already registered, on the shoreline of Sugar Lake next weekend. RACE INFO

This year's SPRINT race should be especially exciting. Most of the "usual suspects" are returning, plus a few talented folks that are making their Timberman debut.

In alpha order, here are some of the projected frontrunners and some of the Age Group elites.

Overall:

 - MITCHELL CLAYTON - Minnesota's 2016 Junior of the Year has demonstrated adult-level star quality since returning to the sport after a long absence. A podium is not out of the question.

- BROOKS GROSSINGER - Brooks is a six-time Timberman winner, twice in the Olympic and four times in the Sprint. He's coming off a fine performance at Des Moines 70.3 (11th overall/ 1st 45-49M). A seventh T-Man win is certainly possible...

"...A Big Deal"...

By Linda Williams

Abby Williams, 17,  from Winona, MN made her debut in the Sprint Trinona on Sunday, June 8, 2025, finishing on top of the podium for her age group.

Though this may not seem like a big deal to some, to Abby and her family it was a day of great pride and accomplishment.

In February of 2024, in the last regular season basketball game before section playoffs, Abby tore her ACL and meniscus.  Abby had surgery in March of 2024 to repair these injuries.

Abby’s recovery was not easy.  She worked extremely hard and by the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year she was back in the pool (with restrictions) with her teammates where she CO-OP’s with the Winona Senior High-Cotter Swim and Dive Team.  Abby has been a member of the varsity team since 7th grade.

Abby continued to strengthen her knee through PT and weight room workouts.  Abby was cleared late in the swim season to swim her signature stroke: the breast stroke, which she holds the school record in.  After only swimming this stroke two times before the section meet, she retained her section title in both the 100 yard breast stroke and the 200 IM (individual medley) and earned a trip to the MN State High School Swim And Dive Tournament. Abby finished 5th in both of her events...

2025 Fairmont Sprint Triathlon Preview - TEVIN NEEGAARD's brilliant course record --54:32--at the umpteenth Fairmont Sprint last year put him squarely on the "tri radar" in our region. The heretofore unknown, in elite circles, that is, went on to claim the well-deserved 2024 Most Improve Male honor. And though he was not on the partial list of entrants that we saw on Monday, we wouldn't be surprised if he raced on Saturday. This race was his launching pad, after all.

If Tevin makes it to Gomsrud Park and were to better his 2024 time, that probably wouldn't be enough to win the race. Why? Because three-time Minnesota Triathlete of the Year PRESTON YOUNGDAHL has signed up. Preston has proven to be unbeatable in Sprint and Olympic in our region since his return to his home state from Louisiana in 2021.

Other men's podium hopefuls include two-time Junior of the Year NOAH BILLINGS, 19, three-time JOY nominee SEAN PICKLE, 20, and ageless and ubiquitous KEVIN MITCHELL, now 55, who won this race in 2023 and 2022. In 2021, he placed 2nd behind Billings....
