The 2025 Minnesota triathlon season is winding down and Clyde and I are starting the process of studying athlete resumes to determine who best deserves post-season honors, i.e. Triathlete of the Year, Master of the Year, Grand Master of the Year Junior of the Year, Most Improved and Performance of the Year.

Today, we are revealing our August Triathletes of the Month.

2025 OLT Stuff...

Before we began composing our SQUARE LAKE coverage, we contacted JUDI, requesting a list of next weekend's ONE LAST TRI registrants. Along with that spreadsheet, she sent us some great words that we happily include here, with her permission.

As of right now we have 52 newbies (OLT). We had 73 at Square Lake Sprint. I am loving these numbers and hoping we can convert more than half of them to come again. The 70.3 was an interesting mix of weather - we had hail in the afternoon. Those poor runners were amazing. I love triathletes and their perseverance. There was definitely a wind factor on the bike - we were noticing some slower bike times as a result...

Saturday Successes...

IRONMAN 70.3 MADISON - Minnesota women, or former ones, with one exception, have led the way at  Madison 70.3. In it's inaugural year (2017), it was HANNAH GRINACKER that crossed the finish line ahead of the women's' field. In 2019  it was Rochester-raised DANI FISCHER who set the pace at the front. In 2021 it was transplanted White Bear Laker NICOLE  HEININGER winning her first of two Madison 70.3s. In 2022, PAIGE SCHULZ won her first of two editions of this iconic race, the most recent, of course, was her victory last Saturday, which she did in PR time.  Her 4:34:48 lowered her previous best, set at Boise earlier in the season by twenty seconds.

BTW, in 2024, it was CARYN HERRICK who collected the W.

Paige now owns the two fastest 70.3 times by a Minnesta women this year and would be a serious contennder for 2025 Triathlete of the Year with one more strong effort at any tri distance. She plans to race at Ironman Chattanooga on September 28.

Paige has established herself as our state's premier female  long distance triathlete in 2025. On the men's side, that distinction belongs to NATHAN KIM, whose '25 scorecard boasts a 3rd at Des Moines (4:06:38), a 4th at Muskoka (4:20:57) and his 2nd at Madison (4:05:48- PR) behind Wisconsin's TYLER TANKO, who would get our vote, if we had one, for US Amateur Triathlete of the Year....

The "Long" Weekend...

With SQUARE LAKE 70.3 and IRONMAN 70.3 MADISON and IRONMAN MADISON  happening this weekend, it's a good time to look at the 2025 long distance results of Minnesota's most successful amateur triathletes, many of whom are racing at the aforementioned events. ....

"I Couldn't Think Of Anything More Awful",,,,

By Marcia Steffen

I'm 60 years old. I hate to run, even though I ran track in High School. I was a sprinter, not a long-distance runner. I haven't swum since I was a kid. I am confident on the bike; however, I ride for recreational purposes only. What was I thinking when I agreed to do a triathlon?

When McKinzie Wiedrich, owner of Coal Country Community Fitness in Hazen, ND, asked me to accompany her to the BisMan Triathlon, I couldn't think of anything more  awful. But I agreed that if I could do the swim, I would sign up. When Brandon Lee, my nephew and the ring bearer at my wedding, heard that I was going to participate in a Triathlon, he told his mom and me, "Marcia will be $20K in before she knows it."

I told Brandon, "Nope, this is a one-and-done". We didn't get to swim in that race due to concerns  of blue-green algae in the water, and we ended up doing a duathlon, run-bike-run.

Remember, I hate to run, and when the race was finished, I told everyone that I didn't love it. And I meant it. ..
