Du-ing It Better...

marloMMA History Stuff - Today's installment, the 3rd in the History series, looks back at the past winners of the Duathlete of the Year awards.

Our state's all-time most successful run-bike-runner is Kristin Miller, who won the DOY an unprecedented four times and would have picked up another 7-8 trophy's had these awards been available in the 90s, a decade in which she was twice crowned US Duathlete of the Year ('94 & '95, we think?).

Kris left the sport after the 2004 season, her knees almost devoid of soft tissue. She then took up rowing (photo below R) and as she did in multisports, quickly developed into a national-class performer. Check out her awesome guns, delts and lats!...

A Long Day in the Desert...Updated..Again...

Ironman Arizona Coverage -

Due to immensely frustrating site problems we we unable to post pictures and much of the content. We'll update on Tuesday.

4:00 PM - It's a 9:04:49 debut for Palmer! Devon finished 17th overall. Congrats Devon on turning in the all-time fastest rookie IM effort by a Minnesotan! Very, very cool!

3:39 PM - Hey, where's Devon? We'll try to find him and get back to you.

3:30 PM - Chrissie's 11th IM win here today took the "Official," i.e. M-dot, world record down from 8:47:26 (Sandra Wallenhorst at Ironman Austria in 2008) to 8:36:13. T'was Wellington's fifth sub-9 and lowered Arizona's women's CR by 33:06. Chrissie finished 8th overall on this damp Sonoran day.

3:00 PM - Germany's Timo Bracht has just rewritten the men's CR at Ironman Arizona. His sizzling 8:07:16 dispassionately gouged more than six minutes out of Jordan Rapp's prior race best. Bracht placed 6th at Kona last month.

2:23 PM - Two Minnesotans are in the amateur women's Top 10 after the first two legs. Jenny Wilcox is in 8th place; Julie Hull is in 2nd just 4 SECONDS behind amateur leader Karleen Dirmantas of Phoenix. Only eight pros are currently ahead of Hull and Dirmantas. How cool is that! Wilcox, a strong runner, was 10 minutes behind Hull when she got off the bike. Both Minnesota girls are on PR pace. Julie's prior best in 10:32:12, set at Ironman Florida in 2008. Jenny's PB is an 11:12 (Wisconsin '09).

Cotton Candy Nerves...

bonnieBy Bonnie Siegel

When I was released from the ICU and cleared to go down to the regular part of the hospital, I asked the nurse if I could walk there instead of laying on the gurney. With guarded approval, the staff watched as I gingerly got out of my hospital bed and slowly made my way to the elevator, two IV's and a heart rate monitor in my wake. When I arrived on the 5th floor the welcoming nurses said they had never seen anyone walk down from ICU.

"Triathletes tri harder." I said with a smile.

As triathletes we push ourselves harder than 99% of the general population. We swim in lakes that harbor Lochness monsters ...
