Hedge's Debut...

dan(Photo - Pre-mustached Dan Hedgecock, who is wearing a shirt he borrowed from his dad, whose neck is bigger than his own.)

Race Preview - Both Dan Hedgecock and Claire Bootsma, who are making their pro debuts at the USAT Elite Duathlon National Championship (Powerman Alabama) on Saturday, have what it takes to be be world class run-bike-runners. Yesterday we speculated on how well Claire-Bear would fare against the this weekend's stout field. Today we'll look at the men's elite field and guess at how well the mustacheful Dan will do.

Here are the guys he'll face:

Daniel Bretscher (Greencastle, IN) - The USAT Pro Rookie of the Year in 2008 and USAT Amateur AOY the year before that, DB has yet to confront a du field like the one he'll face on Saturday. Can our Dan beat Indiana's Dan? We're not sure. This will be a great battle. Our guess is if Bretscher manages to beat Hedge this weekend, it will be the last time he does so. Race Preview - Minneapolisians Dan Hedgecock and Claire Bootsma will make their pro duathlon debuts on Saturday at Powerman Alabama, which is staged at Oak Mountain State Park near Birmingham. The event consists of a 10K run, 40K bike and 5K run and serves as the 2012 USAT Elite Duathlon National Championship. A prize purse totaling $10,000 will be distributed among the Top 5 male and female finishers.

Can Dan and Claire pocket some cash this weekend? We hope so. We know, as they do, that it won't be easy, though. They will be facing seasoned elite du vets, including St. Paul's David Thompson, who is a three-time PMAL champ. And yes, it wouldn't surprise us if DKT took home the biggest check on Saturday. But even for him, as we said earlier in this paragraph, it won't be easy....

Chase, Mace, Megan, Chella Et Al....

chasemegan(Photos L - R - Chase Higgins. We're not sure if he is the Chase Higgins who won the LT-Plymouth Indoor last Sunday and Megan Trickey, who did claim the women's title there.)

Race Coverage - Mace Pfutzenreuter did not win the Life Time-Plymouth Indoor Triathlon last weekend. But we wish he had. Why? Because he has the coolest and most interesting name of all the male contestants. We think his last name is pronounced "Futzen-Royter." We assume that the "P" is silent.

Though Mace, who is an annual participant at the Buffalo Triathlon, did not come in first on Sunday, he nevertheless did very well. He placed 6th overall. Good for you Mace. See you at TriBuff....
