BLAINE & ALBERT LEA PREVES...Updated...

blaine-weather.gifBLAINE PREVIEW -  For grinzies, let's make some predictions about this great young event, which will celebrate it's third anniversary next Saturday. First of all, we believe that the race will hit its enrollment ceiling by the end of the week, so please sign-up at your earliest opportunity, okay?

- Next, race day weather should be awesome, even awesomer than the conditions at Oakdale, which were ideal (60ish, clear and light winds). Check out Weather.com's forcast for the 17th (see graphic)....

Gone to the Next Level...

nicole-oakdale.gifOAKDALE DUATHLON - This race drew its largest and deepest field ever. How deep, you ask? Well, for the first time in its 13-year history its field quality rivaled those of Gear West and Apple. The result was very fast times, featuring several broken records. Hospitable weather also contributed to this.

The previous men's race record was Scotty Penticoff's 1:03:35, set in 2012. On Saturday, four men crushed Scotty's mark. Overtaking Matthew Payne in the final run to win was pro David Thompson, who crossed the finish line in 1:00:30. Payne's brilliant 1:00:54 established an amatuer CR. Third went to Nathan Hoffman, who led after the opening three mile run (14:55!) and was only overtaken by DKT and M-Payne the rest of the way. The former collegiate cross country runner who is a super nice guy clocked a 1:01:21....

Open Water Anxiety..

flailing-swimmer-300x220.gifBy Sara McLarty (triathlon.competitor.com)

Discomfort in the open water is very common. Whether it is a panic attack in the middle of the course, fear of the “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” or simply an aversion to dark and murky water, you are not alone. Anxiety is normal among athletes at all experience levels. The answer to conquering your fear lies in your pre-race training, mental preparation, and creating and utilizing a personal race strategy.

Consider these strategies:

• Mimic the chaos of open water by swimming with a large group in the pool. Share a lane with other swimmers where you’ll be forced to make contact, and swim side-by-side to become more comfortable.
