Immune to the Stuff...

christina-Buff.gifLAKE MINNETONKA PREVIEW - There are only 2-3 multisport events in Minnesota that seem to be impervious to those trends that have been adversely effecting race enrollment in recent year. Northwoods in an example. An even better one, better because it is twice as large as NWT, is Lake Minnetonka.

Sure, LMT takes a little longer to fill up than it used to, but it continues to get its target 600-650 participants. This year, the 12th edition of the race, is no different. In fact, it may have accepted a few more registrations than their 650 limit.

Why is this race special. Why is it immune to the pernicious trends?

We're not sure, but we think that the fact that it is an excellent event in every way has something to do with it. Ross and Tina bust their respective humps to make their participants happy and resolute about returning, and they are (happy) and they do (return). In fact, the LMT recidivism rate is as high, if not higher, than "destination" races like Northwoods and Timberman.

And speaking of recidivism, eight past champions--Brooks Grossinger, Brett Lovaas, Patrick Parish, Steve Sander and Tony Schiller for the men; Jan Guenther, Heidi Keller-Miler and Sarah Mercer for the women--are returning....

It Doesn't Get Better Than This....

CAPITOL CITY TRIATHLON - Many assume that big things are awesomer than small things. Sometimes those people are right, i.e. a big bowl of Ben & Jerry's Salted Caramel Ice Cream is more awesome than a small one. (Another example: Diminutive comedian Kevin Hart is much funnier than porcine comics, Cedric the Entertainer and Sinbad.)

And sometimes those folks are wrong. The Capitol City Triathlon was a small race, only 150ish entrants, but few who participated would rank it beneath any of the larger events that have taken place thus far in 2015, or perhaps will be staged later in the season. Why? Because everythig about it was special. The courses were awesome--closed two-loop bike route, a scenic and gently rolling run around...

Simian Celebrations & Embraced Sufferage...

banana-boy.gifLIBERTY TRIATHLONS - The forecast on Saturday called for clouds and mild temps. No rain predicted. As the astute poet Mick Jagger, who according to the late Joan Rivers, has "child bearing lips," says at almost every Stones concert, "You can't always get what you want."

You guessed it. It rained, though not like in 2014 when the transition area resembled the Everglades, albeit without prehistoric animals and Burmese pythons that Florida exotic pet owners released because the creatures had eaten their non-exotic pets, i.e. dogs, cats and gerbils.

We digress.

Despite the rain, most of Liberty's participants--paraphrasing Jagger--"got what they need"....

Heather Went to Tennessee...

Challenge Knoxville Race Report - At the beginning of this season I wasn’t planning on racing any half iron distance races but after the Lifetime series was cancelled I had to re-evaluate what I was doing.  With no Olympic distance races on the schedule after July, I could either do more draft legal racing or try some 70.3’s.  I didn’t want to plan on racing a bunch of 70.3’s without knowing if I would enjoy it so I set my sites on racing Challenge Knoxville in May.  Since I’ve been dealing with some body annoyances here and there I wanted to see how my body felt after St. Anthony before I bought my ticket to Knoxville.  After a few days of recovery I knew I would be in fine shape to race so I pulled the trigger and bought my flight and hotel for Knoxville....
