Stuff About Compartment Syndrome...

comp-syn.gif

By Dr. Michael Williams

Compartment syndrome is a condition that usually effects either the lower leg or the forearm. These areas of the body are broken up into compartments by fascia and each compartment contains, muscles, nerves, and arteries. Compartment syndrome occurs when the pressure inside one of these compartments rises and causes symptoms, inadequate blood flow, or nerve compression. Compartment syndrome can be broken up into two different types: acute and chronic.

Acute Compartment Syndrome is a sudden and dramatic increase in the pressure of a compartment. This usually results from a crushing trauma, a burn injury, prolonged over-tight...

Freaking Out Isn't Good....

rt0116_brainpain_2080.gifBy Ashley Rodriguez (runnersworld.com/psychology)

In July, Jordan Hasay plans to head to Eugene, Oregon, for the 2016 Olympic Trials. It should be a sweet moment for the 24-year-old distance runner who, just last summer, was forced to withdraw from the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships because of a case of plantar fasciitis, making her ineligible to compete at the IAAF World Championships.

She and coach Alberto Salazar had to make a difficult decision, as they faced the young athlete’s first injury during an otherwise smooth career. And Hasay, like many runners who have had to deal with...

SD's Premier Tri....

outland-girls.gifED. A few days ago we got this email from Hannah Merritt promoting an awesome triathlon in eastern South Dakota, which was won in 2015 by Minnesotans Bridget McCoy (photo center) and David Thompson.

Hi MTN Guys

Happy Wednesday! I hope this email finds you well.

My name is Hannah, and I am the Director of Marketing for the Outland Challenge Triathlon in Gary, SD. A good friend and long time supporter of our race, Kevin O’Connor from Gear West Bike & Tri, provided me with your contact information. I’m reaching out to you in regards to advertising our event with....

Cinco Du Mayo en Cinco de Septimo...Updates...

sam-afro.gifCINCO DU MAYO PREVE - It was heartening to see last weekend's Falls Du get the kind of turnout (300+ registrants) that it got prior to the 2011, when tri and du attendance was thriving. We'd like to think that the sport has begun an "upturn" phase.

With crossed fingers, we are hoping that Saturday's Cinco Du Mayo races attract record, or near record, participation. You can help. If you're not already registered, then sign up. And convince a friend or two to join you. We think you'll be glad you did. After all, the Square Lake venue is awesome. And there will be post race tacos and entrants get a cool, long sleeved tech shirt. How can someone say no to that stuff?

Prior to last week's Falls Du, we made some predictions. They were incorrect, of course. The list of entrants we saw did not include "game changing" athletes, like Kevin O'Connor and Dani Vsetecka, who were late registrants. We're totally cool with this. Our predictions are meant to stimulate interest and discussion. Being right is rare. All we care about is that the race is well executed and participants go home with great memories. An exciting, competitive race is gravy....

Dauer Does it Again...

aurora-and-louis.gif32nd Morris Tinman - Team Minnesota's Sheena Dauer kicked off her breakout season in 2015 with a convincing win at the Morris Tinman's Olympic-ish Distance Triathlon. It was like deja vu all over again for Dauer last Saturday when she repeated as Tinman champ, and recorded her, according to our records, fifth multisport win since her first one on August of 2014 at Green Lake.

Sheena was joined in T-Man's winners circle by Paul Wymar, who like Dauer, made the 50.32 mile drive (distance-cities.com) from Montevideo, which is a good bar town (Topper's, Duggy's, Inn Like Flinn et al). Paul, who is a forestry guy who knows more about geomorphology than most folks, was also victorious here in 2014. FYI, He did some time in The Peace Corps and has been to Paraguay. How cool is that!

Paul has two extremely cute kids (photo).

To secure the win, Paul had to run down Josh Duda. In the end, only four seconds separated those guys....
